What is AquaHA?

AquaHA is a device designed to monitor aquarium, lake, pool parameters and control various devices. Powered by ESPHome, it ensures effortless integration with Home Assistant (HA) providing a smart solution for home automation enthusiasts.

Measures:

  • pH
  • Salinity, dissolved oxygen or ORP
  • DS18B20 temperature sensors
  • 4 liquid level sensors or other digital inputs

Controls:

  • 4 relay outputs with dry contacts
  • 4 dimmable LED driver outputs
  • A beeper to signal alarm situations
  • RS485/Modbus interface

Hardware specifications

2 Atlas Scientific modules

Two fully isolated circuits driven by Atlas Scientific’s modules allow reliable measurements. Acidity (pH) and salinity (conductivity) measurements are default, but it is possible to swap out salinity for dissolved oxygen (DO) or ORP for example.

4 inputs

Can be used for generic switch inputs. For aquariums I offer contactless level sensors which can indicate the presence of water through glass.

2 temperature sensor buses

Allows the connection of more than 10 DS18B20 1-wire-bus temperature sensors.

Modbus / RS485

To link to other modules or talk directly to other devices.

4 LED drivers

Can drive and dim (PWM) four power LED bars/fixtures up to 48VDC and a maximum of 4.2A per channel. At 24VDC you can switch an LED 100W.

4 relay outputs

Four relays with dry contacts can switch up to 1000W per channel depending on voltage. There is a limit of 4.2A. At 240VAC that means you can switch a 1000W load.

Driven by ESP32 with ESPHome

An ESP32 processor running ESPHome firmware provides easy customization. This handles Wi-Fi connectivity and the connection to Home Assistant.

Standalone core features

While Home Assistant is a powerful platform, it may not always be accessible due to updates, reboots, or Wi-Fi connectivity issues. AquaHA, powered by ESPHome, ensures that critical functions continue to operate independently of Home Assistant. These core features include:

  • Thermostat Control: Manages heating and cooling devices to maintain optimal temperature.
  • Scheduled Lighting: Light outputs follow their pre-configured schedules without interruption.
  • Alert System: A buzzer sounds when any parameter deviates from its configured range.

Home Assistant

The possibilities are endless – you can display as much information as you want! Whether you prefer detailed graphs, intuitive dials, or simple numbers, Home Assistant has you covered. If an alarm is triggered, AquaHA will emit a beep, and Home Assistant will instantly send a notification to your phone for real-time updates.
